Puente de Color

Yesterday we went for our first walk of 2011. On our way home we found the bridge behind our house that crosses the 4th Ring Road illuminated. We were mesmerized by the slowly changing colors that had been installed to adorn a simple highway crossing. Beijing has 6 "ring roads" that circle the city and the 4th Ring Road is 8 kilometers away from the center. What puzzled us was who designed this and why? This is a bridge behind my university that crosses a major highway. There is nothing of interest that would draw people here to see it. Why spend the time (and money) to illuminate a bridge in the middle of nowhere? Beauty for the sake of beauty alone? A desire to spread art throughout the city? Yes indeed! How wonderful!
